Michigan Legislation of Interest to Motorcyclists

Substitute for Senate Bill No. 291 - as passed by the Senate June 28, 2011, is a bill that states a person less than 21 years of age operating or riding on a motorcycle shall wear a crash helmet, and that a person 21 years of age or older is not required to wear a helmet if he or she has had a motorcycle endorsement for not less than 2 years or a chauffeur's license or has passed a motorcycle safety course AND has in effect security in the amount of $100,000 for the payment of first party medical benefits payable if he or she is involved in a motorcycle accident. It also includes a provision for this subsection to expire beginning four years after the effective date and requires the secretary of state to conduct a study of motorcycle accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities of motorcycle riders. House Bill No. 4936 - introduced September 13, 2011, by Rep. Lund and referred to the Committee on Insurance, to reform Michigan's no-fault automobile insurance and includes sections related to motorcycle helmet use/nonuse
